Sales catalogue from Panter and Company for the French ship Marquis de la Fayette which was captured by six British warships (HMS Endymion, Egmount, Suffolk, Grafton, Trident, and Bristol) while in passage to Boston. The catalogue provides a complete listing of the ship's cargo and its value.

This volume is the tax book of William Savery, an overseer of the poor, for collecting the poor tax in Philadelphia.

Born in Chartres, France, on August 9, 1722, the chevalier de Berny studied law before entering the military. During the Seven Years War he served in the Low Countries and Germany, retiring to Strasbourg after fifteen campaigns and a number of wounds with the Bavarian Order of St. Michel. He claimed familiarity with a number of European princes and ministers and the protection of the Comte de Vergennes. Berny is known as well as the master of a writing academy in Brussels and as a draftsman. He died on January 22, 1779. Professing admiration for Franklin's support for the arts and sciences, and ever interested in ingratiating himself to the celebrated and powerful, the chevalier de Berny dedicated his "L'Oeil du Maître, ou essai sur le ministére," to Franklin in February 1778. In this essay on governance and the qualifications, activities, virtues, and vices of ministers to the king, Berny excuses himself, a draftsman, for commenting upon the affairs of state by insisting that the thoughts in his essay arose from long personal experience: "le fruit de la fréquentation de nombre de Cours oú j'ai résidé depuis la paix dernière." Franklin appears never to have acknowledged its receipt.

There are various editions of the "Army Register," or "Register of the Army of the U.S.," from 1813-1816, published both in Washington and Philadelphia, with Parker's corrections, additions, and manuscript versions appended. Some of the volumes contain printed regulations, orders, and laws, with his annotations, such as "An Act for Establishing Rules & Articles . . . of the Armies of the U.S." (Washington, 1808); General orders, 1815; U.S. War dept. Letter from the Secretary of war...relative to the...act fixing the military peace establishment... 1816; U.S. Congress. House. Military Committee. Report...1817; U.S. War dept. Letter from the acting Secretary of war...relative to a mutiny said to have taken place at Norfolk...1817. The contents of "U.S. Army Registers, Regulations, Orders, etc., 1801-1815" are listed as: strength of the army; distribution of the officers; commanders of regiments; number of officers authorized by law; strength of regiments; distribution of the army at the close of the war; strength of the army in 1817; a correct register of the army...at the close of the campaign of 1814; regulations, orders, registers, and reports to Congress; etc.

Intended as a model of Jacksonian penal reform, the Eastern State Penitentiary operated in the Cherry Hill section of Philadelphia between 1829 and 1970. Designed to promote the moral reform of prisoners by imposing a regimen of silent, solitary self-reflection, the penitentiary became the purest example of the "Pennsylvania plan" of "cellular isolation." The Records of the Eastern State Penitentiary consist of seven bound volumes and a series of miscellaneous records and correspondence that document aspects of life in Jacksonian America's model prison. The collection has been organized into four series: Series I, Bound Volumes; Series II, Miscellaneous Records; Series III, Correspondence of Elizabeth Velora Elwell; and Series IV, Prisoners' Correspondence. The bound volumes contain records of admission for prisoners between 1830 and 1892 (with some gaps), three of which were kept and annotated by the Moral Instructor at the prison, Thomas Larcombe. Larcombe provided interesting comments on the "moral state" of each prisoner, in addition to data on name, age, gender and race, religious affiliation, the charges, sentence, and final disposition. The unbound materials in the collection are diverse, but include an important 70 page manuscript comprising the records of the joint commission charged with investigating management of the prison in 1835, with a partial transcript of testimony, and a series of 29 letters written to or from prisoners at Eastern State, 1845-1871, most unusually the inmate Elizabeth Velora Elwell, writing to her paramour and fellow inmate Albert Green Jackson.

These materials were collected by Hyslop for a study of the history of freemasonry in France. Included are copies of eighteenth-century documents from the Bibliothèque Nationale, note cards, and correspondence (1951-1959) with French librarians and researchers.

These are copies of the Board of Visitors minutes of the Albemarle Academy (25 March-17 June 1814), and Central College (5 May 1817-1819), both of which were forerunners of the university. There are also minutes of the reconstituted university (29 March 1819-7 April 1826, 10-24 July 1828). Among the members of the Board were Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and James Madison.
